Five Questions with Pierpont’s New COO

In his 14 years at Pierpont, Clint Woods has played a significant role in the company’s development, helping expand to major Texas markets and growing the company’s core values. As the new Chief Operating Officer, Clint is leading by example to attract, motivate, retain and reward premium talent, and ensure Pierpont’s work meets and exceeds client expectations.

Tell us about your career path to COO.
I began my career with Pierpont after earning a degree at the University of Texas at Austin and have never looked back. At the time Pierpont had one office in Houston and after one year in the industry, our CEO, Phil Morabito, trusted me to relocate to Austin to build a team and our brand in that market. After moving back to Houston, I’ve worked to establish Pierpont’s brand and recruit top talent in both Dallas and San Antonio to build out our state-wide footprint. As COO, I lead a team that delivers thoughtful communications counsel and high-impact work to more than 70 clients in Texas and around the world. The portfolio of brands Pierpont is privileged to represent has never been stronger and I look forward to working with our teams to secure a growing number of Fortune 500 clients for the agency.

As the new Chief Operating Officer, what is your vision for the future?
My professional goals are closely tied to Pierpont’s goals. My primary goal is to help continue to grow the company by attracting and retaining the best talent in the marketplace and partnering with clients who are passionate about their brands and reputations. Additionally, as our work reaches across states and borders I hope to continue fostering Pierpont’s presence with multi-national corporations. I am also keen to sustain the company’s core values and culture. We’ve been named to the HBJ’s list of Best Places to Work in Houston eight times, including this year, which is a testament to our intense focus on preserving our core values and culture.

How has living in Houston contributed to your success?
Houston has been the ideal environment for both my professional success and that of Pierpont. Houston is the hub for the global energy industry and I have played a pivotal role in leading Pierpont’s nationally recognized energy practice over the past five years. Having both broad experience and an in-depth understanding of the energy industry has enabled me to better serve each client within the field. It’s also helped Pierpont build a reputation for exceptional client services within the energy space. However, Houston has also afforded me a number of opportunities to work in areas outside of energy. The city’s development over the past decade has brought with it a wealth of opportunities. We’ve worked with a number of organizations launching in the city and have helped them successfully navigate and thrive in this market.

How do you contribute to the community outside the office?
I actively participate in Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas (JASET) as a member of the board. The organization focuses on promoting financial literacy and college readiness to help provide young Texans access to the education opportunities and leadership skills necessary to become tomorrow’s leaders and entrepreneurs. I’ve helped the organization gain recognition as a thought leader on how to prepare our students for successful lives, emphasizing the idea that workforce readiness starts well before college.

What kind of advice can you give to young professionals starting their careers?
Earlier in my career, I was intensely focused on my personal development and advancement. At times, I was eager to ensure I was personally delivering the “big idea” or key result for a client. As you grow, with the help of leaders and management, you start to understand the importance of building and supporting the team in alignment with our core values. During my 14-year journey, I’ve been humbled on a number of occasions and have learned that in a professional service business, you can only achieve growth through alignment of purpose, values and behaviors.
