The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)’s Red River Regional Conference, hosted by the PRSSA chapters of University of Texas and University of Oklahoma, invited Pierponters Terry Hemeyer and Teresa Henderson to discuss the public relations industry with students in the region. The conference took place in Dallas from Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 through Sunday, Mar. 2, 2014.
Terry Hemeyer, executive counsel at Pierpont, co-hosted a breakout session on job hunting and Teresa Henderson, senior vice president and Dallas general manager, led a session on nonprofit and start-up public relations. With 160 students from 10 universities in attendance, Hemeyer and Henderson’s sessions were standing room only.
Henderson presented “PR on a budget.” Tips included “Limit the number of people on the phone or in a meeting – that eats up the budget,” and “What’s not included in the scope of work is just as important as what is included.”
Hemeyer presented “How to get a job and are you qualified.” Hemeyer urged students saying, “You have to be tenacious and never give up when looking for a job,” and “Social media is not free – it’s time consuming, expensive and constantly changing.”
The event offered students the opportunity to network and connect with public relations professionals through speaking panels, breakout sessions and workshops. The first regional event of its kind in over ten years, the conference welcomed students from schools in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico. The conference successfully provided a forum for students to interact with industry experts and gain insight into the public relations and communications field.
