​Pierpont Imparts Industry Insight at Valenti Career Workshop ​

Affirming our commitment to education, Pierpont sponsored the Valenti School of Communication’s recent career workshop at the University of Houston’s Alumni Center.

Pierpont’s CEO Phil Morabito moderated a panel discussion and participated in roundtable chats with Senior Account Supervisor Brittney Garneau and Account Supervisor David Gonzalez exploring how to snag that ideal job or internship.

Joining Gonzalez in the panel discussion were Ray Fohr from Citgo Petroleum, Henry Yau from the Children’s Museum of Houston and Doug Schurtz from KTRK-TV. The panel shared insights from their internship experiences, as well as challenges they faced breaking into the PR and communications industry.

“The biggest challenge is finding your voice and your own unique way of presenting,” said Schurtz, who also provided tips geared for budding broadcast journalists. “Find your niche and know what makes you unique to when someone sees your videos, they’ll say, ‘Wow, that’s really good.’”

Gonzalez shared his struggles of finding a paying internship during an economic downturn, and summed up his solution in three words: network, network, network. “If you know me, I’m very introverted, but the financial climate forced me to get involved in organizations like IABC. That networking paid off,” Gonzalez explained, adding that it was his first internship that helped him break into PR.

Following the panel, speakers moderated roundtable discussions on a variety of topics that aren’t typically taught in the classroom. For example, Morabito discussed how to impress interviewers, while Garneau, as one of Pierpont’s intern coordinators, led the resume roundtable. Gonzalez provided insights about working on Pierpont’s public affairs team within a PR firm.

Both Morabito and Gonzalez serve as Adjunct Professors at UH, and over the years, Morabito has crafted a “living textbook,” a term he dubbed his own experiences and industry connections he brings to his Integrated Marketing Communications course.
