Report from IABC's Southern Region Conference: Awards, Body Language and Primo Networking

by Scott Cytron, Monday, Oct 22, 2007, 12:10pm If there's one thing I can say - without a doubt - about the gulf coast of Florida, it's VERY hot and humid - yes, even hotter and more humid than parts of Texas.

However, in the case of IABC's Southern Region Conference in Tampa, "hot and humid" also described the sessions during this year's annual conference for more than 30 IABC chapters - from Arizona and Colorado all the way to South Carolina and, of course, Florida. The event hosted by the Tampa Chapter was full of "hot" topics that created more than its fair share of "humidity" or excitement in each and every session.

OK - maybe that's a metaphorical stretch ... but I can say that some 200 communications professionals all found something of interest throughout the 1½-day conference, including the Silver Quill program in which Pierpont's own Stacy Armijo received an Award of Merit in Media Relations for her outstanding work. Congrats, Stacy!

I was captivated by the opening keynote from Tonya Reiman, an author, speaker and consultant who has appeared many times on Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor and on MSNBC. Tonya spoke about "body language" and how being able to read expressions, gestures and posture can tell you an awful lot about that person. She also offered practical examples of how we can read our clients, customers, peers and even our family.

I'll tell you one thing: I'll never deliver presentations the same way again!

Here are two nuggets of wisdom from Tonya:

  • The first impression plays the largest role in every decision-making encounter.
  • It only takes a tenth of a second for our brains to decide if a person is trustworthy.

Kind of fascinating ... and a bit unnerving at the same time.

One of the main reasons to belong to IABC and attend its conferences is the networking. Not only are you in a room full of people who have mostly the same personality type and do the same kind of work, you are able to make meaningful, business and personal connections that are invaluable.

Next year's Southern Region Conference will be held in the Mile High City of Denver. I, personally, can't wait.
