All of those celebrities have been members of the Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet and the most powerful supporter for our local Red Cross community was the late Ladybird Johnson. In her honor, the chapter created the Ladybird Johnson Humanitarian of the Year Award, which it bestowed this year upon Ann Butler.
Stacy Armijo, Pierponter and immediate past chair of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross serving Central Texas, explained, “Very few of the Austinites who run on the trail in our city every morning or who enjoy the new beautiful boardwalk over Ladybird Lake know that it only exists thanks to the amazing efforts of a few exceptional leaders, including Ms. Ann Butler. Some of Austin’s most prized destinations were created and protected thanks to Ms. Butler and it is only right that the Red Cross recognize her with an award named in honor of one of her greatest friends.”
That honor was bestowed on Ms. Butler on April 10 at the Four Seasons Hotel during the annual Luminaria event by the Red Cross. In a special moment for the audience, the award was presented by Luci Baines Johnson, who spoke about her mother’s friend and co-contributor, citing their common commitment to “time, talent and treasure” in community endeavors, for which they’re both so well known and greatly respected.
In addition, the event serves as a fundraiser for the organization to fuel its mission, including responding to disasters both large and small. This year, the event focused on the disaster that affects more Central Texans than any other – house fires – and told the stories of response, recovery and resilience that enable the Red Cross to serve in this crucial role in our community. Pierpont’s own Stacy Armijo closed the evening by sharing details on the Centennial campaign, coming in 2016, when the Red Cross will celebrate 100 years of service. Before the night ended, Stacy had the pleasure of encouraging the crowd to top the previous year's donations, ultimately resulting in the most successful event ever for the chapter.
