Pierpont’s Phil Morabito and Terry Hemeyer were invited back to speak at the annual Power Tools for Nonprofits Conference presented by CenterPoint Energy and the University of Houston. This year’s presentation, "Communication Tools that Make an Impact," addressed the current state of nonprofits’ communication strategies – and how any organization can make a strong and useful communications plan.
Of those in attendance, about one-third of the room had a solid communications plan in place. For nonprofit organizations, a communications plan can be the “make or break” factor. Hemeyer discussed the steps you can take to build a framework for your communications plan, including taking a look at your current situation, developing goals and laying out strategies to meet these goals. According to Morabito, a nonprofit’s strongest marketing tool is its compelling story – a story of helping those in need. By communicating within your organization and developing a story everyone can share, you are creating power for your organization. He advised telling your story any chance you get - networking events, board meetings, websites and marketing collateral. Although there may be many organizations raising money for your same cause, there is something special and different about your story and it is important to share that with potential donors and the local community.
